What is sushi vinegar? Itfs vinegar for making sushi! So when you make sushi rice for sushi, you only need some rice and sushi vinegar. It is very handy because you could avoid making your own sushi vinegar (you donft have to look for a sushi vinegar recipe..that saves time!). Though it is very easy to make your own sushi vinegar, if you can prepare one bottle of sushi vinegar, that would be a lot easier than preparing three ingredients for sushi vinegarc?


Sushi vinegar normally contains sugar, vinegar and salt only (maybe MSG too depending on the product). How to make sushi vinegar, firstly, prepare the following:
1 cup of rice
1 and a half Tb white vinegar/rice vinegar
1 and a third Tb sugar
1 and a half Ts salt


Mix them all together!!! That is all. Some recipes say to mix them with heating but you donft have to and the sugar does not have to be melted either. Personally, I mix them for about 2 minutes;) Itfs easy right? Well, if you buy a bottle of sushi vinegar..it will be even easier though. People do want easier and that works and that is why this product exists. Letfs say, you want to make your own sushi rice tonight but you may be running out of one of the ingredients. Rush to the supermarket and get them all when you can just get pre made sushi vinegar!


You may not know the difference between the rice vinegar and sushi vinegar because obviously youfve never used rice vinegar before. Well, in Japan the common vinegar is rice vinegar so they use rice vinegar more than the white vinegar which is used commonly in western culture. Rice vinegar is just a vinegar where sushi vinegar is for making sushi rice so it has salt and sugar in it too. So if you are making your own sushi vinegar then please have salt and sugar to make it. If you canft find rice vinegar in the supermarket you go to, then just get a white vinegar and that will do.


There are a few differences to rice vinegar and white vinegar. White rice vinegar is a pale yellow to colourless liquid and it has more acetic acid than other chinese vinegars. Acidic is 4 % and as it says it is made from rice. It is a liquid that has mainly acetic acid and water of which about 5% of it is acetic acid. The actual acetic acid part is made when ethanol is fermented with acetic acid bacteria.


If you are using white vinegar for sushi itfs just fine but the flavour will be a little different (you may not notice it though) or just put a little less in than rice vinegar as it is 1 % stronger in acid. Also, rice vinegar can be used as a dressing for salads but because the acid is slightly weaker if you are using rice vinegar instead of white vinegar then add slightly more than what the recipe says because it is 1 % weaker in acid.
Apart from using it for sushi rice, you can use sushi vinegar for esunomonof which is a Japanese vinegared dish and pickles. Especially sunomono, again you can avoid preparing salt and sugar. There are so many kinds of sunomono in Japan, they are all side dishes and they are great. It mostly refers to some vinegared dishes because su means vinegar in Japanese. Often, seafood and vegetables are seasoned with vinegar based dressings and they have a really refreshing taste that makes for an excellent side dish that of course goes well with Japanese food.

The different types

This type of food does vary in flavor, and there are two main types, firstly nubai-zu and secondly sanbai zu. Nibai zu is made with equal portions of soy sauce and vinegar, on the other hand, sanbai zu is made with one third mirin, one third soy sauce and one third vinegar. The actual volume used of each is adjusted depending on the ingredients used and preference. Many people enjoy using dashi soup stock also as it softens the flavor. It essene, anyt types of seasoning can be added and often is. Nibai zu generally goes best with seafood so it is often prepared for that.
For those sunomono, just use some sushi vinegar and after that you can add some sesame seeds or a few drops of soy sauce to make the taste right. Of course you are more than welcome to make your own sunomono vinegar if your recipe says to do so but just a reminder you cannot fail sunomono using sushi vinegar for sure and itfs yummy! Just a small piece of advice..


Sushi vinegar also can be used with chicken and fish too as a marinade. If you are planning to make something different then use sushi vinegar to marinade meat, it will be fascinating for sure and great for experimenting. It is kind of like putting some something special in your meat dish or the hawaiian pizza, a little sour taste will change your dish for the day. Especially, sushi vinegar is all prepared containing both salt and vinegar so that makes it easy to give your dish a taste, wouldnft it.
